Last Friday the Wasatch High School Football Team fell to the Skyline Eagles 44 to 28. The Wasps broke down mentally with simple penalties and turnovers which allowed the Eagles to gain first downs and opportunities to score.
“We didn’t do the little things,” said Wasatch’s Head Coach Steve Coburn. “We committed too many mental mistakes which resulted in giving [Skyline] too many advantages offensively.”
Wasatch had good moments during the game. When the offense came together the Wasps scored, but, again, the penalties were a major factor in the point difference.
“It would have been a closer game if we didnt’ have all of the penalties and turnovers,” said Coach Coburn.
The numbers show a closer game than the final score.
In the 1st quarter Skyline was able to score 22 points to Wasatch’s 7. In the 2nd quarter Wasatch held Skyline to 9 points and scored 2. The 3rd quarter belonged to Wasatch with a touchdown by Isaac Young giving the Wasps 6 points, but the field goal was missed. Wasatch had gained some momentum going into the 4th quarter. The Wasps scored 13 points to the Eagles 10. Brock Cloward made a pass to Kaden Smith for 6, but the 2 point conversions failed. Jaden Parkinson made a 1 yard run for another touchdown in the 4th to give the Wasps 13 points.
“We gave up too many points in the 1st half,” said Coach Coburn. “During half time we talked about fixing the little things. We made some adjustments and came out in the 2nd half looking a lot better.”
Brock Cloward finished the game with 14 completions out of 23 attempts and 252 yards passing. Jaden Parkinson put up 83 yards rushing and Kaden Smith finished the night with 118 yards receiving. Total offensive yards were 416.
“We will make some adjustments this week during practice,” said Coach Coburn. “We will move some guys around, we will look at replacing some guys in some positions. We will be ready for region. These pre-region games help us work some things out.”
This Friday the Wasps will be on the road to play Cottonwood High School. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
