Special to the Wave

Deer Creek State Park’s Sailboat Beach launch and sections of the adjacent shoreline will be temporarily closed to the public beginning as early as Monday, June 1, 2020 through August 2020. These closures will accommodate work to collect geotechnical data and geological samples for the design of the Deer Creek Intake Project.

Provo River Water Users Association (PRWUA) is beginning preliminary design work to upgrade the aging infrastructure in Deer Creek Reservoir and safeguard the water supply from invasive species. PRWUA is evaluating innovative design and construction methods to replace the water intake and guard gates, which regulate flow, without draining the reservoir and interrupting the water supply to the Wasatch Front. Project design and construction is anticipated to begin as early as Fall 2021.

What to expect:

Crews will conduct drilling operations near the dam to collect geotechnical data and geological samples. The public will see a barge with drilling equipment on board and crews coming and going to conduct their work. Work will occur June 1, 2020 through August 30, 2020, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Park visitors should check current park conditions and use the Main or Island Boat ramps for access to the reservoir.

Safety is a top priority. Residents and the recreating public are advised to observe posted signage and closures. Access is restricted within 1,500 feet northeast of the dam (in the reservoir and on shore), the dam structure, and all posted areas around the dam.
